Library History

Hog Hammock Public Library was founded in 2002 by the Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society (SICARS). It began with a few shelves in the SICARS office, and books were checked out using the honor system. So many books were donated to the small library, that it was moved to the old school building just down the road.  In 2006, the library became a separate nonprofit and was rededicated as a member of Three Rivers Regional Library System, which serves Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Glynn, Long, McIntosh and Wayne counties.

Leadership

Hog Hammock Public Library is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees. The board sets the library’s policies, but also follows policies established by Three Rivers Regional Library Board and the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the University System of Georgia. Hog Hammock Public Library also must abide by state and    federal laws governing public libraries.

Funding Sources

Funding for operating expenses comes entirely from donations by generous individuals and sales in our small gift shop, which features an island tour booklet published by our library. Programs are often funded by grants. Other funding sources include in-kind services and materials from the regional library system, and the state and federal government.

Programs

Hog Hammock Public Library offers programs throughout the year, including storytellers, scientists and historians such as archeologists, linguists and other presenters, arts-and-crafts classes, films, homework help, book talks, computer help and activities for the entire family.

Past programs have included a GPS Scavenger Hunt, a two-day pottery workshop, an African drumming workshop, fish-printing and sand-casting classes, poetry readings, and a seminar on the work of linguist Lorenzo Dow Turner. Thelibrary also maintains an herb garden that was planted by students to share with the community.

Heritage Collection

The Hog Hammock Public Library is the home of The Heritage Collection, a non-circulating special collection of materials that includes nonfiction and fiction adult and children’s books, audio and video recordings and documents — including obituaries and    newspaper articles —  that tell the story of Sapelo Island’s history. Visitors interested in researching their Sapelo Island genealogy will find several valuable resources in the library’s Heritage Collection. In addition, the library has connections with trained librarians and  researchers, and free access to Ancestry.com and other genealogical resources available at its sister libraries.

Library Services

We accept PINES library cards, which give our patrons access to more than 10 million items from libraries all over Georgia. We offer free access to Georgia Library Learning Online (GALILEO), a virtual library that includes   periodicals, scholarly journals, books, business directories, government publications and databases such as Ancestry.com. Services also include free high-speed Internet and WiFi, as well as free digital audiobooks that can be downloaded by PINES cardholders at the library or at home.
